Recently, I've resurrected an old PC to use as a dedicated firewall running Smoothwall. Unfortunately, out of the box, the Intrusion Detection System, which is based on Snort, fails miserably.
The reason for this is that the installation of Smoothwall 3.0 sp1 comes with Snort 2.8.3.1, and the current version is 2.8.4.1.
Fortunately, there's a modification available to upgrade Snort. Instructions on performing this task can be found on the Smoothwall forums.
(Posted because for some reason I wasted about 3 hours googling for this information without finding it. Sigh.)
