I've successfully booted the Itanium-based machine I have here. It was a bit of a struggle to get a bootable disk constructed to do the VMS install, but after moving a drive around between carriers, and using a bit of sneaker net, I finally managed to get an install to happen.
The installation was completely painless, and after all the hassle of getting the bootable disk working, having the machine boot was a bit of an anti-climax.
I mean, it looks like VMS. heh.

We are getting one in about a week. Also looking to boot VMS. What problems did you have exactly? I am hoping to avaoid them with a little fore-knowledge. If you can get back to me via regular email I would appreciae it.

The problem that I had was that the rx2600 uses the old HP style of disk carrier. I don't have a shelf connected to an Alpha that I could plug one of these disk carriers into (you need an Alpha to write a bootable OpenVMS 8.1 disk).
I had to take a screwdriver to the carrier and transfer the disk drive to a StorageWorks carrier to be able to connect it to an Alpha. After the the bootable disk was constructed on the Alpha, I had to transfer the disk back.
This was more a pain than anything else.
Also be aware that there is a known problem with a SSRVEXCEPT crash at PROCESS_MANAGEMENT_MON+2C360 that appears to be load related.
I believe Engineering can supply you with a patched image, but I haven't bothered to get a copy as the machine will shortly go back to the vendor.
My testing of code portability was very successful.
Good luck!
